Although Everett Cline can hardly keep up with the demands of his homestead, he won't humiliate himself by looking for a helpmate ever again--not after being jilted by three mail-order brides. When a well-meaning neighbor goes behind his back to bring yet another mail-order bride to town, he has good reason to doubt it will work, especially after getting a glimpse at the woman in question. She's the prettiest woman he's ever seen, and it's just not possible she's there to marry a simple homesteader like him.
Julia Lockwood has never been anything more than a pretty pawn for her father or a business acquisition for her former fiancé. Having finally worked up the courage to leave her life in Massachusetts, she's determined to find a place where people will value her for more than her looks. Having run out of all other options, Julia resorts to a mail-order marriage in far-away Kansas.
Everett is skeptical a cultured woman like Julia could be happy in a life on the plains, while Julia, deeply wounded by a past relationship, is skittish at the idea of marriage at all. When, despite their hesitations, they agree to a marriage in name only, neither one is prepared for the feelings that soon arise to complicate their arrangement. Can two people accustomed to keeping their distance let the barricades around their hearts down long enough to fall in love?

This novel definitely had me turning the pages fast. However, I was truly conflicted on how to rate it. I am about to go into my reasons why... so if you want absolutely no more info (spoilers) stop reading now.Jagears builds a well developed story and characters. There is a lot of faith based truths peppered through out. All of this is well done. They reason why I did not rate this novel higher is that I did not like how long it took for the couple to actually start to communicate and be friendly. As I read I tried to hurry through and even skimmed in areas that did not feel important, hoping to reach the point where there was not only more interaction between the two, but also some sort of friendly companionship. I finally, after reading over 3/4 of the book had to put it down last night and go to sleep. Realizing it was just not going to happen until the end of the novel.
There was a HEA ending but I really missed out on the developing of the friendship/romance that could have been there. Even with the personal conflict that needed to be resolved, I felt there could have been more of a enjoyable relationship sooner. Overall, this is a good read!

A Bride For Keeps Unexpected Brides Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Melissa Jagears Pilar Witherspoon Recorded Books Books Reviews
Everett Cline has been tricked by his close friend and neighbor. His friend has sent for a mail order bride but his neighbor is married. The bride evidently is for Everett. This is not Everett's first attempt to marry a mail order bride and had no desire to try again. But his friend thought otherwise and arranged for a mail order bride for Everett.
Julia Lockwood had no idea her groom to be knew nothing about her or her arrival. But when all comes to the surface Julia is determined to prove to Everett she was more than a pretty face. She would work hard and show him what a good, if not perfect, helpmate she could be for him.
I enjoyed this story immensely and it's characters. Everett and his lack of faith in actually claiming a bride. Julia was so determined and learned things she never believed she would ever have done in life. Oh, how special it was to have such loyal and caring friends as their neighbors.
This was a journey leading to a beautiful romance which grew in faith with God and his path for their future together. They learned to not only trust in each other but in God.
The cover image caught my attention. Especially the expression on Julia's face. I could not wait to read the book. I was not disappointed. .
I highly recommend this book.
Disclosure I received a free copy of this book from Bethany House/Baker Publishing for review. I was in no way compensated for this review. It is my honest opinion.
Julia is coming to see her friend Rachel, but she's also agreed to be a mail-order bride for Rachel's friend, Everett. The strange thing is that Everett is very distant and seems to want nothing to do with her. She has secrets in her past that she's running from, so she doesn't want to push him too hard. She's just looking for protection.
Everett has had the worst luck with women. Not much of it is his fault, but the town likes to tease him about it. He is drawn to Julia, but fears that she'll just leave like all the others. They all left in different ways, but he's in pain and believes Julia is just the next one. When he finally comes to his senses, will Julia be able to trust him enough to make their marriage work?
I think most of this book can be summed up with the quote, "What we have here is a failure to communicate." (By the way, I use that phrase all the time but just looked up its source today - Cool Hand Luke, 1967) Anyway! These two wallow in their own sorrows for most of the first half of the book, making them both a bit irritating. I kept reading, because I knew it had to get better. I wasn't wrong! This turned out to be a great book!
The next book in this series isn't due out for quite some time. A Bride in is due out in September. From the summary, it's about Axel, a very minor character in this book. If you haven't read Dex and Rachel's story (they show up a lot in this book), make sure to read Love by the Letter. As of today, it's still free. You're not going to feel lost if you don't read it, so it's okay to read these alone. I look forward to the next one.
Wonderful book. I read historical Christian fiction novels almost exclusively, so the stories can get a bit repetitive. I found this book exciting, captivating and refreshing. There are a few very tiny loose ends that don't detract from the story, and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys these types of books. Just be prepared to lose some sleep as you get into it... "just one more chapter!" won't end up being just one....
Unfortunately, I really had a hard time getting through this book. I felt it was kind of unrealistic that Everett had four mail order brides that either married someone before they reached town(already promised to Everett), died on the train and two others who picked other men once they reached town. I've never read a mail order bride book where when they've written to and contracted to be someone's bride and had their transportation paid for, picked someone else with no payment to their original groom! Especially when the groom is a handsome and kind man.
I won't even go into how drawn out and for me, very boring two thirds of the book, when he finally gets a wife. It was way too drawn out with a lot of Bible verses added in. Very difficult for me to finish. A lot to wade through.
Julia Lockwood from Boston has been writing to Rachel Stanton and decided to come out west to meet Everett Cline to see if they could be a match. It seems He Everett does not know what Rachel had planned for him. Everett has not had much success with mail order brides. I really enjoyed this book and found it hard to put down to go to sleep at 200 AM. I felt like I was right there with them wanting to give Jules a shake and tell her to wake up before you loose the best thing that ever happened to you.
